Holme Cultram

An ancient parish in Allerdale below Derwent Ward, Cumberland, the main township is Abbey Town (Holme Abbey).
Holme Cultram St Mary is part of the Abbey that was founded in 1150 by Cistersian Monks and fell in disuse after the reformation of the 16th century. The church you see today is partly due to restoration work that started in 1703 and continued into the 20th century.
Holme Cultram, St Cuthbert, the new church was erected in 1845 but there are records of chapels going back to 1327.
Newton Arlosh, St. John, was built in 1303 by the monks of the Abbey. After the dissolution of the monasteries it went to ruin and was not rebuilt until 1845.
Silloth, has two churches, Christ Church from 1870 and St Paul formed of part of St Cuthbert’s parish in 1850.

Some transcripts from 1663 onwards are at Transcripts Holme Cultram
