I agree with all you say Jean Smiley

IGI baptisms for that period at Alston are in Batch P000203
There is actually a Sarah WALTON 1845 - and also 4 others of similar age in Alston in 1851.

I can't find this one - can you give more details  Huh

Ken
With the Wills, I seem to remember that you looked into this for the Alston area ( which was in the Cumberland area,  but some were held at Northumberland  Huh).  Also when are the Durham and Northumberland Wills coming online - I seem to think later this year  Huh

Hilary - have you followed Elizabeth Tamar Little through all the censuses  Huh.  I fell sure you have but just wanted to check and see if she was missing in any census.

I do have Elizabeth Tamer Little in the censuses –

1841 census – Raise in Alston ( Raise House and one or two other cottages on the outskirts of the town) living with her mother Sarah

1851 census – Gateshead, living with her mother Sarah and nephew Luke William Pearson

1861 census – Elswick, Newcastle, has 2 nephews with her – Thomas Little and Luke Wm Pearson

1871 census – Elswick, Newcastle running a lodging house

1881 census – Botcherby, Cumberland, as retired lodging house keeper

I have done quite a lot of research on the Little family, who were farmers around Garrigill and then found a lead ore vein on Cross Fell, which they mined and becoming wealthy moved to Raise House in Alston.

In the church at Garrigill, on the north wall near the altar, there is a sizeable memorial plaque in black marble to John Little, which says

“Sacred to the memory of John Little Esq. of Raise house in the Parish of Alston who departed this life on the 9 July 1821 aged 47 years leaving a widow with five sons and three daughters who with an affectionate regard to his memory have caused this monument to be erected. Sarah Relict of the above John Little who died at Alston on 14 August 1857 aged 80 years.”

Thank you to Ken for the list of burials, some of which I didn’t have.

I have recently found the Will of John Little. The Probate was granted at PC York. It seems to include what happens to the estate when his wife Sarah dies, so I don’t think she will have left a Will.
I have also requested the Death Duty register entry for John Little from the Naional Archives, but that hasn't arrived yet.

Thanks for all the help

Hi Hilary,

Have you seen a copy of the PR baptism entry for Elizabeth Tamar LITTLE? My guess is that the mother was Sarah as the IGI, Family Search & census all point to it being Sarah. I think the curate has been having a bad day when he transcribed the BT’s.

I have made an awful discovery (for you anyway) whilst checking the LITTLE’s in my family tree. Diana LITTLE who was bapt on the same day as her sisters Elizabeth Tamer & Sarah, married John DRYDEN on 31 Jul 1832, Alston. John DRYDEN was my 2nd cousin 4 times removed so we must be distantly related, sorry. I have several generations of the DRYDEN line if you need details.

Jean,

Looking at John DRYDEN’s sister, Mally seems to be a form of Margaret, as I found her as both.

Hi Ken

Sorry to disappoint, but I am related to the Littles by marriage – my husband Tony has John Little as his great (x4) grandfather. I have been helping with his researches.

I do have a photocopy of the baptisms of Sarah, Diana and Elizabeth Tamer. It states the parents as John and Sarah Little of Raise House, trade Yeoman. It also gives the dates of birth of the girls as they were all christened on the same day –

Sarah – born July 29 1810

Diana – born 12 Feb 1812

Elizabeth Tamer – born 23 Oct 1815

I only have details about John and Diana Dryden and their children, which mainly came from the rather splendid monument on their grave in Alston cemetery. I have a photo of it if you would like a copy.
