Hi
I am sorry if this sounds weird, but of Its a strange case Déjà vu,a feeling sure that one has witnessed or experienced a new situation previously (an individual feels as though an event has already happened or has happened in the recent past), although the exact circumstances of the previous encounter are uncertain

So i wonder if anyone can help me, my family farmed Fauld Mill , Arthuret in the late 1800s under the name of Walter Beaty &  his wife Catherine Mc Burnie [ Beaty].

When i was young , about 1956! our car broke down on the way North & we stayed for a few days in Hotel in Brough, i was able to descibe a room  before i entered it, even down to a large picture behind a door.
My parents scoffed at this, sadly!! but they never knew of the family connection at Fauld Mill

It is only recently i found out about my Grand father & his family in Arthuret & surrounding area, Brompton etc & i cannot get this out of my mind  Smiley

My question is, if any one can help me,did famers from this area tavel to Brough market etc. would this of happened as regards distance & time in the late 1800s. Would it of been possible?

I can think of no other reason why i would know this hotel so well, yes it sounds very strange indeed, & i have no explanation for this.

I am Scots as most of our family are, but they criss crossed the border for many years from 1770 onwards & have never been in this area at all, but intend to correct this next year.

Sorry if this sounds a strange question
Kind Regards
Ron

Hi Ron,
Your experience doesn't sound strange. A similar experience happened to me while driving through Arizona.
We were going through a small town in the most isolated area, and were looking for the motel we had booked in. Without thinking, I said to my husband, turn left at the next cross roads, keep going  and it's next to a gas station on the left, opposite a drug store.. I didn't realise what I had said until he asked how I knew that, and I couldn't answer him.  Deeply sceptical, he followed my instructions, and there it was. I was really unnerved as I am British, Cumbrian on all sides of the family back to the 1700's and had never been to Arizona in my life before.
We went over it and tried to explain it in many ways, but I do not to this day, know how I knew where that motel was.
I will be interested to know if your ancestors had seen the hotel room.......or not.
Cue music from the Twilight Zone.
good luck Elizabeth

Ron
It was quite possible for your ancestors to have travelled to Brough. The annual horse fair was a major event for the area and Brough is on the main link between Westmorland and North Yorks.
From about 1860 there were train links in the area and a trip from Carlisle (Arturet) to Brough would have been easy, though I don't know what the cost would have been. In fact if you are talking the late 1800's then the train service in all probability would have been very good. Perhaps a 2 to 3 hour trip at the most.
So all in all it is quite possible he had been there.
But then there are all sorts of explanations for Deja Vue.
