One wonders at what stage she was actually at Beaumont House ...

... or infact where Beaumont House actually was ... was it Dalston or Dere St?

Have a map and think about it Smiley http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=394326&Y=572600&A=Y&Z=120

Geoff,

That seems to fit together a bit better, I thought everything was in Cumberland and did not realise that Ellen had popped over the hill into God’s Country. However, it still does not answer the original question of where is / was Beaumont House.

Gordon has not been active since 12 July, the day before we went crazy with this, so may send him PM asking for his comments then we can sign this one off if we can’t make further progress.

Sorry Geoff, did not see your second post, will have a look later.

In the 1894 Northumberland directory at www.historicaldirectories.org there is the entry

Chollerton
HALL Henry, farmer, Beaumont House

I've found him there in 1891
Henry HALL 39 Farmer

Not much to see from the road I'm afraid Sad http://tinyurl.com/357h7rx

Quote
... and this one

Mary N CAMPBELL 9 Hexham

whom I believe began life with a different name

Births Mar 1892
NORMAN    Mary        Hexham    10b   3_8

Could not find a Mary N CAMPBELL registration to fit, so yes I would agree she was originally Mary NORMAN.

In 1891 William CAMPBELL had been a widower for no more than 5 months as he had dau Jane Isabella aged 5 months with him, registered Dec Qtr 1890, Hexham. Death of a Jane CAMPBELL, age 28, registered Mar Qtr 1891, Hexham, looks like only one to fit.

As Ellen was living Hexham area in 1891 and had a child registered there in 1892, but said she was living Beaumont House, Dalston when she married in 1894, I wonder if Gordon could check marriage cert to see if it actually said Dalton, which is just to the south of Hexham.

Hi, well i am very very sorry i have taken so long to reply to all your great messages. I did not expect to get any replies at all, thank you all so very much for the information you have given me, it is very much appreciated.

Ellen Norman was born on the 20th of October 1864 in Upperby, Carlisle, Cumberland. Her parents were David Norman a railway labourer and Ann Norman, formerly Sharp. After her mother died she was living with her father and stepmother at the time of the 1871 census.

At the time of the 1881 census she was working as a general servant in Cumdivock house in Dalston a suburb of Carlisle. Two years later, on the 4th of October 1883, she gave birth to a daughter, Annie. The birth certificate does not name Annie’s father. Annie was baptised in the Parish of Upperby on the 28th of October 1883. There is the record of an Ellen Norman in the 1891 census. She was a general servant, age 26, born in Carlisle, working at Plankey Mill, Ridley, Haltwhistle, Northumberland. But there is no proof that she is our Ellen.

In 1892 Ellen was in Hexham Workhouse, while she was in the Workhouse she gave birth to a baby girl, who she named Mary Norman (Mary N Campbell) born 29 Feb 1892. Ellen married William Campbell on the 14th May 1894, in Hexham register office, William was a widower from Barrasford Hexham, he was a stone quarryman. At the time of their marriage Ellen was 30 years old and William 36. I have looked at Ellen Norman and William Campbell’s marriage certificate and I think you are right it does look like Dalton and not Dalston. I have added the marriage certificate so you can see for yourself, sorry i could not attach the full marriage certificate because of size restrictions on uploads.

At the time of the 1901 census Ellen and William were living in a cottage in Barrasford Chollerton, Hexham.  The 1901 census was taken on the 31st of March.

Eleanor Campbell age 1, born Chollerton Hexham.
Jacob Campbell age 17, born Chollerton Hexham.
James Campbell age 19, born Chollerton Hexham.
Jane I Campbell age 10, born Chollerton Hexham.
John Campbell age 12, born Chollerton Hexham.
Joseph Campbell age 4, born Chollerton Hexham.
Mary Campbell age 15, born Chollerton Hexham.
Mary N Campbell age 9, born Workhouse Hexham.
Susanna Campbell age 3, born Chollerton Hexham.
Thomas Campbell age 6, born Chollerton Hexham.
William Campbell age 13, born Chollerton Hexham.

At the time of the 1911 census Ellen and William were still living in a cottage in Barrasford Chollerton, Hexham. The 1911 census was taken on Sunday 2nd April.

We have 2 new additions to the family in 1911 Richard born about 1902 in Barrasford Hexham. And Wilfrid born about 1905 in Barrasford Hexham. Six of the Children have now left home Jacob, Jane, John, Mary, Mary Norman Campbell, and William. Of course some of the Children could be deceased.

James Campbell age 29, born in Chollerton Hexham, whinstone Quarryman.
Thomas Campbell age 16, born Chollerton Hexham, whinstone Quarryman.
Joseph Campbell age 14, born Chollerton Hexham, whinstone Quarryman.
Susanna Campbell age 13, born Chollerton Hexham, a scholar.
Eleanor Campbell age 11, born Chollerton Hexham, a scholar.
Richard Campbell age 8, born Chollerton Hexham, a scholar.
Wilfrid Campbell age 6, born Chollerton Hexham, Juvenile.

Thank you very much for your help, it is very much appreciated.

Cheers Gordon  Smiley

Hi, it won’t let me attach the marriage certificate for Ellen Norman and William Campbell, and the file is only 114kb, any suggestions?

Cheers Gordon.

I have just found this on Google, Beaumont House Farm, Humshaugh, Hexham NE46 4HU. I wonder could this be the Beaumont House Ellen was living in when she was married?

Hi Gordon,

That is the Beaumont House that Geoff gave the Google Streeetview URL for in reply #17.
It is about a mile or so north-east of Chollerton, so I would say looking good for being your Beaumont House. However, if it is the one it seems strange that Ellen would say she was living Beamont House, Dalton, as Dalton is a few miles further south with Acomb & Hexham in between.

I am sure John will step in and help you attach the marriage certificate.

I looked up the 1911 census and then downsized to 50 kbs, hoping to upload it on this site for you, only to be met with a message that I could not do this.
John can you look at this please, 50 kbs is well under the kbs you specify

In the meantime for the 1911 census:
Family are living at Reg District Hexham sub distict Chollerton, parish Chollerton, Enum District 5, Address Barrasford, county Northumberland.

Campbell William Head, married 16 years, male 54,  birth year 1857  occ Whinstone Quarryman, bn South Shields, Durham
Eleanor Campbell, wife, married 46 years, bn 1865, at Upperby Carlisle.
Campbell James son, single male, 29 years, bn 1882 occ Whinstone Quarryman, bn Barrasford, Northumberland
Campbell, Thomas son, single, male, 16 years, bn 1895 occ Whinstone Quarryman, bn Barrasford, Northumberland
Campbell Joseph son, single male 14 years, bn 1897 occ Whinstone Quarryman, bn Barrasford, Northumberland
Campbell Suzanna, daughter, single, female bn 1898 Barrasford, Nothumberland
Campbell Eleanor 11 years, female bn 1900 at Barrasford, Northumberland
Campbell, Richard son, 8 years, bn 1903, at Barrasford, Northumberland
Campbell Wilfrid, son, 6 years, bn 1905, Barrasford, Northumberland.

Now anyone who can add up can see that there is at least one son - James who is 29 years old, who could not have been the son of William Campbell, but who is on the census as "Campbell" and also bn Northumberland.

Hi Jean Smiley

You are repeating what has already been given (see Gordo's post of 11:46 today).  This was Bill CAMPBELL's 2nd marriage.
